History of the Church of Santa Fosca of Venice
The name comes from a miraculous image of the Madonna that a sculptor had placed in his vegetable garden and that soon began to be venerated by the inhabitants of the district.
The church is an essential stop to learn about the paintings of Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, who was finally buried in the chapel on the right next to the altar with his children.
The factory was committed throughout the 15th centuryè being placed on a pre-existing buildingè and was one of the most typical structures of Gothic Venice, as evidenced by the tripartite faade. The niches in which the statues of the Twelve Apostles by Delle Masegne are placed are of Romanesque origin.
Going up on the bridge in front of the church and looking back, you can see the bell tower and the great influence of Arabic culture on Venetian architecture.
Devotion to the Virgin is manifested in the interior with The Presentation at the Temple (1552) which Jacopo Tintoretto painted on the doors of the organ. And it is precisely to Tintoretto that we owe the decoration of the presbytery with two huge canvases belonging to his youth: The Jewish people who adore the golden calf and The Last Judgment. While on the main altar dominates the Annunciation and the Eternal Father in Glory of Jacopo Palma the Younger.
The church was robbed on the night of March 1, 1993 of the Madonna and Child of Bellini, still undiscovered.
