Burano, an ancient center of the Venice Lagoon, is famous for its brightly colored houses and for being the home of the Lace Museum.

Torcello was a residential center as early as the 5th/7th century following the invasions first of the Huns and then of the Lombards. The fugitives from the city of Altino found refuge there. The name of the island probably derives from TURRICELLUM (the tower erected in memory of that of the lost homeland).
