Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità Venezia Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità - Campo della Carità, Dorsoduro 1050 - Venice

The Scuola Grande of Santa Maria della Carit was next to the church of the same name which today houses the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, in the same place where today the Academy Museums are located.

History

The Scuola Grande of Santa Maria della Carità is one of the oldest of the secular-religious Venetian institutions: the date of foundation is established, in fact, in 1260 and was the first to have the appellation of "great" (such were the Schools of the Beaten or those which, as a type of penance, imposed the flagellation on their members).

The events of the Scuola, above all economic, allowed its supporters to buy over the centuries a large part of the area owned by the adjacent monastery, giving the opportunity to erect the hotel, in which to accommodate the needy, as well as to use the land neighbors.

The only testimonies that allow us to establish the architectural appearance of the building come from a splendid painting by Canaletto which in his Laboratory of the stone cutter offers us a splendid image of the area around the Church of Charity and therefore of the School: from it he discovers a faade adorned with elegant pinnacles, with two high central windows and a curvilinear crowning. This shape of the faade on the field remained practically unchanged until the half of '800 or until the Massari redesigned the lines and then leaving the execution at Maccaruzzi: we find in it the Corinthian columns still present, set on high podiums, which frame the slender windows on the sides, while above the central door there was a niche inside which a sculptural figure was placed. Other statues were to crown the lunette pediment in the summit.

Like all the other schools, this too was suppressed in 1806 with the famous Napoleonic edict: the complex of the Carit was thus destined to house the Academy of Fine Arts, an activity still underway. Still in 1808, the Selva, in revising the internal structure of the School in order to make it functional to the new role to which it was and still is destined (entrance of the Galleries), is once again modifying the external faade: the two windows The central niche above the entrance portal is eliminated from the lateral areas without any molding, but above all the curvilinear crowning is replaced with a powerful attic, which gives the building a typically austere shape.
