"Mimo Paladino"

Organised by the Venice Museum Authority and curated by Enzo Di Martino and Flavia Scotton, the exhibition will be open to the public from 8 June to 31 July 2005. One of the most important figures of the so-called Transavanguardia, Mimmo Paladino first established his international reputation in the Aperto section of the 1980 Biennale. Now he returns once more to Venice with some twenty pieces that include large-scale sculptures and works on paper. All produced for the occasion, these illustrate the latest phase in the artist's work, their powerful and impelling forms so recognisably exemplifying Paladino's intriguingly archaic imaginative world. Laid out on the ground floor of the Museum, the exhibition will comprise a sculpture garden in the courtyard with six large-scale works created for the occasion, and 15 large works on paper in the two side rooms (these too are being exhibited for the first time). The sculpture includes a four-metre-high tower in terracotta; a large five-metre-diameter disk in the same material (a homage to Beuys) and a bronze horse some three metres high which will stand on the steps giving onto the Grand Canal. With their dense weave of mysterious signs and indecipherable figures, the works on paper provide one with further insight into the artist's use of the medium of paint.

Mimmo Paladino was born at Paduli (Benevento) on 18 December 1948. In 1964 he visited the Venice Biennale and was powerfully impressed by the work of Rauschenberg. His own first exhibitions came in 1968, whilst in 1973 he would start employing a mixed technique in works that combined a complex iconography and extraordinarily composite meanings. Having moved to Milan in 1977, he would in 1980 exhibit at the Aperto Section of the Venice Biennale alongside Chia, Clemente, Cucchi and De Maria.

Exhibition from February 11th to May 30th 2005
"LA PARTIGIANA VENETA - Arte per la Resistenza "

On the whole 30 works are present at the exhibition curated by Flavia Scotton, and which is mainly about the polychrome majolica scuplture, La partigiana, by Leoncillo Leonardi, commissioned in 1954 to be placed in Venice at Giardini di Castello. The first version wasn't accepted since the artist was asked to change the scarf colour which shouldn' t have been red but more neutral. For this reason Leoncillo made a second sculpture which was put on a stand designed by Carlo Scarpa, and placed at Giardini, the unveiling of which took place in September in 1957. In July 1961, a fascist bomb completely destroyed la Partigiana by Leoncillo. The sculpture present at the exhibition is the first version which remained for long in the artist study and was later on purchased by Ca' Pesaro. The sculpture, which after 50 years is still very innovating , is on the first floor at the entrance way, together with a draft dating back to 1955 borrowed from Istituto Veneto per la Resistenza, and a big painting by Un fantasma percorre l'Europa (1949-50), belonging to Ca' Pesaro collections, but normally not exhibited due to its big size. In the small rooms, we find eight copper draftS made by the author who in 1964 took part in a contest for the making of a new monument devoted to la Partigiana, . The competition was won by Augusto Murer with the work that is still to be found in front of Riva dei Sette Martiri: the 8 works present are by Carlo Conte, Napoleone Martinuzzi, Ennio Pettenello and Romano Vio, Marcello Mascherini, Giovanni Paganin,Giuseppe Romanelli. Other works present at the exhibition deals with subjects about the Resistance movement and the Holocaust like the works by Guttuso and Music - belonging to the museum collection but normally not exhibited. We also find other works by Pizzicato coming from the artist archive. Other works by Renato Guttuso like his engraves of 1981 on paintings of 1943, taken from the famous series Gott mit uns; six etchings by Zoran Music and one painting from the series Non siamo gli ultimi, of the seventies made during his imprisonment in 1944-45.

Exhibition from November 21st to January 9th 2005
"I Pulcinella di Lello Esposito"

The exhibition devoted to the architect LINA BO BARDI and organized by Luciano Semerani, Antonella Gallo e Giovanni Marras has been opened at the Galleria Internazionale d'Arte Moderna of Ca' Pesaro. One of the most important aspect of the exhibition , which is part of the 9th International Architecture Exhibition of Biennale, is the architecture freedom represented by more than 200 original drawings. The starting point of the architecture experimentations is the metamorphosis concept which gives birth to changing geometrical forms of which expression is a very important aspect. By means of his fantasy , the artist obtains odd and creative associations from parallelepipeds, piramids and spirals through an imagination tortuous path among social centres, houses and museums all seen with a design and art postmodern point of view .
