CHURCH
OF SAN POLO -
Sestiere
of San Polo, IX
sec. -
Almost
nothings remains of the ancient foundation of S. Polo Church: archipointed
door with two angels, the big Gothic finial by Bon's work-shop and the
bell tower that dates back to 1362.
Interior cearly shows the restoration made in 1804 by architect Davide
Rossi who adapted the previous Gothic church to his neoclassical changes.
This church is known for many works are kept inside, expecially sixteenth
century Venetian paintings as L'ultima cena (Last Dinner) by Tintoretto
on the back wall and L'Assunta e i santi, probably realized by
the artist in collaboration with his work-shop. Lo sposalizio della
Vergine (Virgin's wedding) by P. Veronese and La conversione di
San Paolo by Jacopo Palma il Giovane.
Maybe the real masterpiece kept in this chuch is 14 stazioni della
Via Crucis realized by Tiepolo.
