CHURCH OF SAN STEFANO - Sestiere of San Marco, XIV sec. -

Santo Stefano's church is one of the best Venetian example of flowered Gothic. Facade unfortunately is on a walking area that doesn't allow to admire the main door, a masterpiece by Bartolomeo Bon.
Church was finished in the 1374 and internally has the typical architecture of fourteenth century's churches: three wide and long naves separated with columns with coloured capitals; pointed arches make slender the structure and increase the magnificence of the building.
Santo Stefano has an absolute importance for Renaissance sculptures: on the right handside a marble urn and the Busto del senatore Antonio Zorzi, by Alessandro Vittoria; then many female imagines made in the Lombardo's shop. Altars keep high quality works of Venetian paintings from fifteenth to eighteenth century: L'orazione nell'orto by Jacopo Tintoretto (sacristy), a Battesimo by Paris Bordon, La Vergine col putto by Palma il Vecchio, L'immacolata Concezione by Jacopo Marieschi.
