CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DEL GIGLIO - Sestiere of San Marco, ancient -

Church raises in the omonimous campo (Venetian square) and took its name by the ancient Venetian family Jubanico that became extinct in the Middle Age. This family ordered to bild this church dedicated to Santa Maria del Giglio.
Actual building was built at the end of seventeenth century on a project by Giuseppe Sardi with the money of Barbaro's family that wanted to commemorate its seafaring virtues and t warlike spirit. Facade is strongly baroque and keeps some statues rapresenting the Barbaro's closing the main door and the Captain Antonio Barbaro's statue in the middle of the first floor.
Interior has a unic nave with presbitery and chapels and could offers to the visitor a trip through the Venetian painting of 1500 and 1600. In fact it keeps works by Jacopo Palma il Giovane, Paolo Veronese and Jacopo Tintoretto. Sacristy keeps painting by Zanchi and Rubens; Abramo che spartisce il Mondo is by the first artist and Madonna con Bambino e S. Giovannino by the second.
Zanchi is even the author of the paintings on the organ and of those on the ceiling.
Tintoretto signed I quattro Evangelisti kept beneath the organ.
