CHURCH
OF SAN Fantin
- Sestiere
of San Marco, XVI sec. -
The
architecture of this church is based on a project due to the Scarpagnino
that was carried on by Jacopo Sansovino after the death of the Scarpagnino
(1549) and finished in 1564, bringing brilliant changes as the construction
of the presbitery and the beautiful apse. Nowaday the facade is characterised
by austere simplicity due to the use of the "Istria Stone".
Interior has three naves and has architectural details quite similar to
the San Salvatore Church. San Fantin is known for the presence of two
Jacopo Palma il Giovane's paintings: Il Doge Luigi Mocenigo dopo la
vittoria della battaglia di Lepanto (1571) and La Deposizione di
Cristo nel Sepolcro (end of sixteenth century). Worthy of a visit
is also the painting by Giuseppe Heinz il Giovane representing La Vergine,
santi e il parroco Giovanni Pomelli che intercedono per liberare Venezia
dalla pestilenza del 1630, a work that dates back to the end of the
seventeenth century.
