S. EUSTACHIO
(Stae)
- Sestiere
of Santa Croce, XI sec. -
Sant'Eustachio
Church, S. Stae in Venetian dialect, presents one of the most theatrical
facade among all the churches facing the Gran Canal, both for the in
front space of the building and for the abundance of the marlble groups
that characterize this baroque church.
Architect Domenico Rossi won the competition and started to build the
facade in 1709, while the interior is older and was projected by architect
Giovanni Grassi who started the construction in 1678.
San Stae keeps many works of Venetian-eighteenth-century: San Jacopo
legato ad un manigoldo juvenile work by Piazzetta, il Martirio
di San Bartolomeo (1720) by Tiepolo, San Pietro liberato dal
carcere by Sebastiano Ricci and many paintings by Pittoni.
