You're in: IVT / PHOTO TOUR / CHURCHES / SESTIERE OF SANTA CROCE / CHURCH OF SAN SIMEONE PROFETA GRANDE

S. SIMEONE PROFETA (GRANDE) - Sestiere of Santa Croce, X sec. -

The history wants this church founded in the tenth century and restored many times later. It seems that in the eighteenth century a new floor was built above the elder becouse a plague victim was buried inside. This could reasonably be a legend but the restoration made in 1839 revealed the existence of another floor rich of seals.
On the altar close to the door there's La presentazione al tempio by Jacopo Palma il Giovane, altar-piece that was once placed on the main altar. La Statua giacente by Simone Profeta - work that gave the name to the church - seems to be by Marco Romano.
