S. GIACOMO
DALL'ORIO
-
Sestiere of Santa Croce, XII sec. -
It
seems that the curios name of this church (dall'Orio) was born from
the tranformation of the word lauro (laurel) as once there was one close
to the building.
Outside still keeps main characteristics of the original foundation,
besides the bell tower that is a typical Venetian-Byzantinian construction
of the fourteenth century.
Interios has a latin cross plan with one nave and two aisles and a wonderful
ship's keel ceiling but the most important aspect of this beautiful
church is surely that San giacomo da l'Orio owns the larger number of
works of the Venetian Renaissance: Episodi della vita di Gesł
by Andrea Schiavone, Allegoria della fede e I Dottori della
fede by Veronese (new sacristy), the San Sebastiano that
is probably the Marescalco's masterpiece, the Flagellazione by
Tizianello (Tiziano's offspring) and many paintings by Jacopo Palma
il Giovane.
