CHURCH OF SANT'ALVISE - Sestiere of Canaregio, XV sec. -

Tradition wants this church has been built in 1388 ordered by Antonia Venier and then consecrated to San Luigi, bishop of Tolosa - whose statue of fiftheenth century camps over the main door - after the apparition of the bishop in a Venier's dream .
Gothic architecture of the facade seems to give reason to this legendary story.
This was one of the most loved churches by J. Ruskin who tried to ascribe to Carpaccio the eight tempera paintings (now kept at Correr Museum).
Moreover this church is important and known for three marvellous paintings by Tiepolo: two juvenile works (1738-40), La flagellazione and Cristo incoronato di spine, and a later work (after 1740), La salita di Cristo al Calvario in wich Tiepolo melted the baroque theatricalism with the Tintoretto's dramatic style.
